Karate Kobudo Renmei

Ryukoku Seidokan Defined

'Ryu' 琉球諸島 Ryukyu Shoto "Ryukyu Islands"
'Ryu' is an accepted short reference to Ryukyu-- the name of the Southernmost island chain of Japan.  They were their  own kingdom until 1609, then subjugated by the Japanese but always referred to as the Ryukyu Islands.

'Koku' combined with 'Sai' means International.  It has been shortened from its long form and accepted in the short form dropping 'Sai' but the meaning still implies -- International.

'Sei' means true or righteous. It also has its older meaning rooted in the Uchinanchu Language referring to the Okinawan King's family.

'Do' or Michi means way, path, or road to a destination. The characters when written are a combination of a house with smoke rising at the side.

'Kan' means style and sometimes house.

'Kara' means empty, air, or sky.  This is modern Japanese usage referring to Okinawan hand arts.  Originally a different character was used that referred to China and showing the connection of Okinawan martial traditions to China.  This was not popular in Japan so the character for empty was utilized
instead.

'Te' / 'Ta' / 'Ti' means hand.

'Ko' / 'Furu' means old or ancient.
'Bu' means military.

'Do', 'Dou' or 'Michi' means way, path, or road to a destination. The characters when written are a combination of a house with smoke rising at the side.

'Ren' combined with 'Mei' for the word Renmei which is a federation, alliance, group of persons with a similar like purpose.

Put all together it means the 'Ryukyu International True Way Style Alliance' or 'Ryukyu International House of the Righteous Way Federation' more commonly accepted by most of our dojos.

Our name reflects our goals and preservation effort to
keep the old ways of traditional Toma Seidokan Karate
alive and carry it forward not only to the United States,
but throughout the world.  It is our hope the pursuit of
bettering one's character through the practice of our
Karate can be something people of all countries can find
in common and share between one another.

Ryukoku Seidokan Karate Kobudo Renmei stood up in October 1, 2008 to meet the needs of Seidokan teachers and practitioners returning to and residing in the USA.

RSKKR is subordinate to our Sensei Toma's Honbu world organization, the ZOKKTR.  The RSKKR honbu is Nix Seidokan Dojo, which has more students than any other dojo in Okinawa.

We serve as a direct link to Sensei Toma who serves as Senior Advisor on our board of directors.  Chaired by Ron Nix Kyudan, the Ryukoku Seidokan Karate Kobudo Renmei provides instruction to senseis and establishes standards.  We also  promote national conferences and develop future programs that will help dojos to grow and have continuation training regardless of location.

2008 and 2009 are our beginning years.  We at Ryukoku expect a lot from the Seidokan dojos who make up our collective whole; however, the Ryukoku honbu will give equally as much or more back in return.  Train well in the spirit of Seidokan.

Ryukoku Seidokan Needs
For years Seidokan Karateka have been making the pilgrimage back and forth from the USA to Okinawa.
Some have had the opportunity to train in Okinawa while in the US Military.  Sensei Toma has always been sympathetic to the American GI's who helped rebuild his Okinawan island home after WWII.  The US bases provided work so he could have a livelihood again.  This is why his mission was to teach those US Military men and women what he knew best: his Karate system.

Since the early days of the Toma Dojo, many have come to Okinawa from other countries to train and the popularity of Okinawan Karate became a world passion.

The founding of this Renmei fulfills the need to get additional continuation training and support so the Seidokan community can support itself and continue to grow.

This Renmei has been long overdue. The future belongs to those who become involved and look beyond their own dojos and into their communities.  To this end the Ryukoku Seidokan Karate Kobudo Renmei was created: to better us all.
